Shall I tell you the secret of the whole world? Painting, Parody & Disguise
March 29 – July 26, 2014
Curated by Michael Stillion
“Man is not what he thinks he is, he is what he hides.”
- Andre Malraux
The work of Columbus-born, Cincinnati-based artist Michael Stillion revels in the delirious disguise, pushing notions of both masquerade and refuge to extreme, theatrical ends. His primary medium – painting – has been caught in a bind for decades: widely practiced, yet dismissed by many in the art world (including the very architect of this building).
The “Death of Painting” has subsequently become a tired refrain of 21st century art theory, even as the supposed funeral shroud becomes a tantalizing curtain to the next act. That which was left for dead, re-emerges in alternate forms of, and beyond canvas and brush. This exhibition assembles artists from, or currently based in Cincinnati who turn camouflage, costuming and misdirection into vehicles for resistance and revelation. Smiling coyly behind the mask with tongue in cheek, this work revels in carnivalesque contradiction: pushing secrets and chagrin into an unfamiliar spotlight.

I have been included in a group show at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio - Formica Forever. My 3 pieces are "Ghosts" hydrocut out of laminate and assembled on board.
I have a show coming up at Linda Warren Projects in February 2013.
February 8 – April 5, 2013
Gallery Y: Ed Valentine “Somebody’s Beauty”
Gallery X: Michael Stillion “B.Z.&C: Bent, Zigzag and Crooked”
Opening Reception: Friday, February 8, 2013, 6-9pm
Linda Warren Projects is proud to usher in 2013 with exhibitions by gallery artists Ed Valentine and Michael Stillion. Though both painters engage portraiture on the surface, each artist spins off from that trope, transcending the figure and presenting viewers with differing conceptual points of entry. In Ed Valentine’s “Somebody’s Beauty” in Gallery Y, and Michael Stillion’s “B.Z.C: Bent, Zigzag and Crooked” in Gallery X, both artists build pictures upon frameworks with endless potential for painting production.
Show at the Birke Gallery at Marshall University.
The Birke Art Gallery’s slate of fall semester exhibitions kicks off with a display of artwork by Cincinnati-based artists/educators Michael Stillion and Kate Labmeier. The exhibit will feature oil paintings and drawings by Stillion, and embroidered “animal portraits” by Labmeier. A reception with light refreshments will take place at the gallery on Thursday, August 30 from 5-7 pm. At 5:30 pm, Stillion will lead students and patrons on an informal discussion of the work on display and his experiences as a working artist.
The exhibition opens to the public on Monday, August 27, and will remain on display until September 14, 2012.
